The Panzerkampfwagen III, abbreviated Pz.Kpfw. III but commonly known as the Panzer III, was a German medium tank developed in the late 1930s and widely used during World War II as the main battle tank of the German Army between 1940 and 1942. Its official designation with the German Army Armaments Office was Sd.Kfz. 141. Initially armed with a 37 mm anti-tank gun, it was intended to engage enemy armoured vehicles while the Panzer IV, initially designed with a short 75 mm gun, provided fire support for Panzer divisions.
