The Short Magazine Lee–Enfield Mk I (often written as SMLE Mk I) was introduced in 1903 as a shortened and more modern evolution of the earlier “Long Lee” rifles such as the Magazine Lee–Enfield. It was designed to provide British infantry with a more compact, faster-handling rifle without sacrificing the range and reliability of the .303 British cartridge.
The SMLE Mk I featured a 10-round detachable magazine (typically loaded with charger clips), a smooth rear-locking bolt system, and a shorter barrel that made it much more practical for rapid movement and close combat. It was one of the first British rifles designed around the idea of a “universal” infantry weapon rather than a specialized long-range musket-style arm.
