The Brazilian nuclear submarine is part of an ambitious project by the Brazilian Navy, known as the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB). This program was initiated with the goal of ensuring strategic defense capabilities for Brazil by developing nuclear-powered submarines and expanding sovereignty in the use of nuclear technology.
The project gained momentum in the 1970s when Brazil entered into an agreement with Germany to develop conventional submarines, and later incorporated the idea of developing a nuclear-powered submarine. The development intensified in the 2000s with the creation of an engineering and nuclear technology center focused on building a nuclear-powered submarine.
In 2008, Brazil formalized an agreement with France, which would collaborate on developing the nuclear propulsion technology for the submarine. The first Scorpène class submarine, the Riachuelo, was delivered in 2018, while the nuclear submarine Álvaro Alberto (named after a Brazilian scientist who was a pioneer in nuclear energy) was still under construction.
The Álvaro Alberto will be Brazil’s first nuclear-powered submarine and is a major achievement for the country, marking an important milestone in defense and nuclear technology industries. The project is also seen as a key step for national security, allowing Brazil to have a submarine capable of operating in international waters, within a broader geopolitical context.
Once completed, this nuclear submarine will place Brazil among the few nations in the world with the ability to build and operate nuclear-powered submarines, reflecting a significant technological and strategic advancement.
