Vendome column — the Parisian column of Victories (former name) The Grand Army on the Place Vendome in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, erected by decree of Napoleon I of January 1, 1806, in memory of the victories he won in the campaign of 1805. It was built from August 25, 1806 to August 15, 1810. Project of architects Zh. Gondouin and J.-B. Leper.
The column, an imitation of the Trajan Column in Rome, allegedly made of metal from hundreds of cannons taken by the Great Army from the enemy-the Russians and Austrians, in fact, is made of stone and overlaid with bronze bas-reliefs. This can be seen in the photo of the destroyed column. Its height is 44.3 m, diameter 3.6 m. The column is helical-a strip of 280 m long, numbering 22 turns-overlaid with bronze from 425 bas-reliefs by Leper, which depict the actions of the campaign of 1805. An internal staircase allows you to climb up. The top of the column is surrounded by a gallery, in the middle of which stands a statue of Napoleon, already the third in the history of the column. It is made by the sculptor Auguste Dumont and represents Napoleon in the form of an ancient Roman emperor, draped in a short cloak and having the signs of glory-a sword, a winged goddess of victory and an imperial laurel wreath.
