The VSS-M (GRAU index 6P29M) is the modernized variant of the VSS Vintorez suppressed marksman rifle, updated to improve ergonomics and modularity. It retains the original integrally suppressed, gas-operated design chambered for the subsonic 9×39mm family of rounds, giving it quiet signature and good terminal performance against protected targets at typical engagement ranges. Compared with the Soviet-era VSS, the VSS-M adds an aluminium adjustable buttstock with cheek rest, improved buttpad, and expanded Picatinny rail mounting over the dust cover and around the suppressor for optics and accessories. It is commonly paired with Russian compact optics (e.g., 1P86 or 1P87) and can accept higher-capacity magazines used on related platforms, increasing its tactical flexibility. VSS-M continues to be associated with special-operations and reconnaissance units that need a quiet, short-range precision option.
